Tate and Lyle History
Henry Tate began his business in Liverpool in 1869, it merged with Abram Lyle's company in 1921, creating Tate and Lyle. In 1955 they commissioned the Cementation Company to consruct them a new silo at Huskisson Dock in Liverpool. It took just over two years to complete, and was built out reinforced concrete - 12 sections each supported by 6 external ribs that run up and over the exterior of the silo.

The tower was constructed next to the state of the art silo, and was responsible for collecting sugar from the Huskisson Dock, transporting it over the road, weighing it and then distributing it into the silo building. This was done using two conveyor systems and some clever machinary inside the tower, and a small rail system on the top of the silo. The sugar was deposited into a hopper that ran on the rails, and at regular intervals the sugar was deposited into the silo. The conveyor that links over the road is still in place, however the conveyor that links to the main silo has been removed. I'm unsure when the tower closed, paperwork found in it suggests mid 1970's. The silo building is Grade II listed and is still in active use for grain storage.
