British Sugar - Kidderminster
This was a sugar beet factory that was part of the British Sugar Corporation.
The British Sugar Corporation was created by the Sugar Industry (Reorganisation) Act to manage the entire UK sugar beet crop in 1936. In 1981, the government sold their 36% share in the corporation and the following year The British Sugar Corporation became a public limited company, trading as British Sugar plc. Nine years later is was sold to Associated British Foods, who still own it today.
Under strain from competition with imported sugar, it was forced to close some of its sites. One of which was in Kidderminster, closing in Febuary 2002
It is currently being demolished, and I'm quite gutted I hadn't seen it earlier. I enjoyed what I've seen of it, but looking at other peoples reports it's clear to see that there is only a small amount of the whole site remaining. Even in the two weeks between my visits, vasts amounts of have changed.
It won't be long before this place is completely gone
